Bosch Spade Bit Extension

The Bosch Daredevil spade bits (SEE REVIEW HERE) are some of the best drilling tools I've used. The only thing you have to be careful of is being sucked completely into your workpiece, as strange as it sounds. I also learned (in an absent-minded professor moment) NEVER to use them chucked into a drill press. That was an exciting few seconds in the shop, let me tell you. Too bad I didn't catch it on video, it would have made a great YouTube moment.

Length Matters

Operator-error aside, these Daredevil extensions come in handy when your project depth exceeds your Daredevil length. Here's what's in the package - the 12 inch extension and Allen key.

Daredevil in Use

The bit slips into the receiver of the extension and the two set screws secure it in place. The one closest to the bit tightens against one of the flats of the bit shank, helping to minimize spin-out, while the other tightens into the recess of the shank, helping to prevent the bit from pulling out of the extension.

I've read some reviews with complaints that the female receiver should have been hex-shaped to prevent spin-out, but I had no trouble with the bit loosening during use. In another review, the user complained that the set-screws broke, but again, not while I was using the extension.

The bit remained securely in the extension while I drilled through multiple layers of drywall, plus 3/8" and 3/4" plywood. No problems encountered whatsoever.

Daredevil Extension Opinion

Several manufacturers make different styles of extensions on the market today, each with their own design, strengths and weaknesses. For less than $10, the Bosch Daredevil extension seems to be a good value for the money and has a solid design. I've used the quick-connect version made by Irwin and had a couple of issues with stability of the bit - nothing that was insurmountable, however. While it was a quicker install than the Bosch, it didn't feel as solid as the Daredevil in use.

My only complaint with this extension is that it doesn't fit neatly into the soft-case that the bits are stored in. :)

We may have to wait until the next case design for that to happen. Until then, this will have to suffice.
