I've said it before and I'll say it again - small businesses make the world and the economy go 'round. It's a truth that can't be denied. Unfortunately, it's getting harder and harder to start - let alone maintain - a small business.

That's why I love to shine the spotlight on "the little guy" as often as I can. Guys like Richard Frost and Joseph Ryan are giving it the old college try. They've come up with a tool called the EZ Pin Extractor. It looks like this.

It's used for removing hinge pins, as you've probably guessed. I've given it a try and it works.

The concept is pretty simple: You place the EZ Pin Extractor below the door hinge, placing the shaft of the tool adjacent to the hinge barrel. This will align the tool's extraction pin with the hinge pin.

Give the bottom of the tool a whack, using a hammer, and voila - the hinge pin should pop right out.

There are two versions of the tool - one for commercial use (left in the photo below), and one for residential (yup, the other one). The difference being the size of the half-round shaft.

Each EZ Extractor also comes with two different pins to fit a variety of hinge sizes. Changing them out is simple - loosen the thumb screw, swap out pins; then re-tighten.Here's a look at a video that Richard and Joseph put together to show how "EZ" the EZ Pin Extractor performs.
