Dremel Trio Review

It cuts, it sands, it routs. At least that’s what Dremel says. I’ll say it’s a pretty handy tool to have around the shop.

Dremel Trio Overview

I first saw it at the Hardware Show in Vegas last year (2011). For some reason, it stood out amongst the other tools in the booth. It has a unique look, most definitely. Of course, that means squat if it doesn’t perform as advertised.

As for the fit of the tool in your hand, it’s comfortable and the controls are easily reached. I also like the articulating handle. In the 90 degree position, it feels like holding a jigsaw and gives you more control in that sense. With the handle in the alternate position, it feels more like a trim router. In either case, it didn’t feel like much of a learning curve with regard to simply holding the tool; it felt familiar.

The variable speed control is nice, allowing you to dial in the perfect speed for the material you’re working on. The trigger-lock is also a nice feature.

As for performance, I’ve use it mainly with southern pine, but also with some hardwoods. You can see it in action in these videos:

Southern Pine Porch Bed Swing (at around 2:39)

Southern Pine Bird Feeder (at around 4:56)

Dremel Trio Performance

The  chamfer bit left a nice edge on the holes and beams. The fact that the tool is lightweight adds to the comfort factor when you’re in the middle of a project. It feels like a detailing machine, precise and able to fit into small spaces. I actually preferred it over using my trim router for this project, simply because I was better able to control the tool is a tight area.

The sanding drum attachment is a handy tool, as well. It certainly beats using sandpaper and a finger to get into those areas that need a little cleaning up.

The kit also includes a handy edge guide for detail work or making rabbets along the length of a project piece.

As a router, it performs as expected – it’s great for small projects in a pinch. In situations where my trim router is too much of a workhorse, the Trio fills the gap. As a detail sander, the variable speed and weight of the tool make it simple to use.

If you have it in your budget to spend, the money invested in this tool should make you a very happy camper.
