BOSCH CM12SD Miter Saw | WOC Preview
New & Improved Compound Miter Saw?
Bosch was a major presence at the World of Concrete this year in Las Vegas and they brought some of their newest tool innovations to show us in the desert sunshine (amidst the concrete dust). We liked what we saw, especially with this tool - the CM12SD Sliding Compound Miter Saw. One of the best things about Bosch is the fact that they listen to their end-users and are good about taking suggestions. To that end, they've kept what already worked with this tool's predecessor, but changed what needed to be tweaked.
One of the features that remains is the detente-override, so you can adjust the saw - precisely - to whatever angle you need, without it slipping into a neighboring detente.
Craig Wilson gave us a tour of the innovations on the saw - take a look.

Bosch's Improvements
No matter which saw you own, there never seems to be enough room under the blade to cut that one particular piece of base or crown you're installing. Not so with the CM12SD - Bosch re-worked the drive mechanism gearing to add clearance to the rear of the arbor. The result is 6 3/4 inches of room to cut base to your heart's desire.
They also made the table base extensions larger to add support for larger material.
They added a nice touch with the ability to adjust or even remove the tall fence plates. You know, the ones you almost hit every time you forget to adjust when you're making a steep-angled cut. Or is that just me?
The miter saw is available with or without Bosch's awesome Gravity-Rise Stand. We highly recommend you give it a try if you haven't. Be careful, though, because you'll want one!
Our Opinion
I don't think you can go wrong with a Bosch product. At least, I can't remember one ever failing me and the Bosch JS572E remains my favorite jig saw. If you need a reliable miter saw that goes above and beyond, this unit should provide years of service.
The only negative we found was in a review on the link below regarding dust collection. You can read it and judge for yourself.
As always, I'm a little gun-shy of first-generation models of anything, as I think they have inherent bugs and glitches. Since the CM12SD is built on the chassis of its predecessor, though, that shouldn't be an issue. It's just a better machine, with improved features.
