Milwaukee Door Lock Installation Kit

Maintenance and Building Supers everywhere will get a kick out of this one. It's an easier way to more accurately install door locksets on a consistent basis. Sure, there've been kits like this before that promise the world, but rarely deliver. They usually end up in a workshop drawer, buried beneath old screws, nuts and wrenches. This time, though, Milwaukee says things will be different - this will be your go-to install kit for now on. From what we saw at the New Product Symposium, they could be right.

Kit Features

The kit consists of the requisite hole saws, pilot drill bits and such. But it also includes a very slick, auto-centering and easily-adjustable drill guide that clamps onto the door edge with the twist of a knob. Ed Lau, Product Manager for Hole Saws, says the guide can be adjusted for doors 1 3/8" wide to 1 3/4" wide in less than 10 seconds. That's a vast improvement over systems of old, if you ask me.

During the product demonstration, some attendees were challenged to adjust a competitor's guide in a test of speed. Most failed miserably - so much for not reading the instructions, right? Well, that's the beauty of the Milwaukee guide - you can figure it out in about the time it takes you to read this sentence.As with most kits of this type, the guide is made from a high-impact ABS plastic that looks like it'll outlast the next ice age. All the parts and pieces looked sturdy, well-engineered and constructed to us. We'll have to wait until September of this year to see how it performs under pressure, but the price is certainly right - Lau says it'll be available for around $35 - $45. Stay tuned!
