Here in Texas, it’s been a very wet spring. We have had the most rainfall in the month of May since records have been kept. And along with the rain, there have been storms, flooding, power outages, and all around nasty weather. But, those inclement conditions made me think, we have not yet shared with you about a relatively new tool accessory that was recently brought to our attention. It may be one of the most important things you can have in this type of weather. It might even safe your life or the life of someone you love. It’s call GenTent.
What is GenTent?
Recently we were introduced to Mark Carpenter, inventor and CEO / President of GentTent Safety Canopies, LLC. He is passionate about the product, and even more passionate about the fact that lives can be saved by using this simple, but very smart idea. So what is the GenTent? Simply put, it’s a tent for your portable generator. But there’s a lot more to it than that.
Why use GenTent?
Mark discussed with us an obvious dilemma that brought about his idea. In many cases, the reason to use a portable generator, is because weather conditions are such that there might be a loss of power. But if you look at the warning labels on the generator, it becomes a little complicated. The first warning label states, and most people know, NOT to use a generator inside, even in a garage. Why? Because the exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which can kill.
BUT, the next warning label tells the user not to operate in wet conditions, like rain or snow, which is precisely when many people need a generator. Mark had a goal: develop a method to safely keep portable generators operating during the worst weather conditions.
How To Install
That’s how GenTent Safety Canopies were born. They are easy-to-install, weatherproof covers for your portable generator. By following the simple 3-step operation of “clamp it, frame it, and cover it”, you can avoid risks associated with CO poisoning, and keep your generator working outdoors and it remains portable.
Evolution of GenTent
Like most quality products, GenTent has changed a lot due to a lot of trial and error. For example, one of the first prototypes tested completely enclosed the generator. Mark and his team determined that it needed to be open (like a canopy) , because that restricting airflow could easily cause the generator to overheat. That could be dangerous for the user and potentially damaging to the generator. Over time, GenTent has evolved to be a tent or canopy-like cover mounted over the electrical components on your portable generator, but still allows the operator easy access to refueling and maintenance.

Is there a GenTent for every portable generator?
Last point to make in this introduction: there is a GenTent model to fit the majority of the generators on the market, 98 percent of them to be exact. You might need either the GTU or GTX frame adapter kit depending on the specific model, but all you need to do is go to the GenTent website and put in the make and model number of your generator and you’ll find exactly what you need. If you happen to have an Invertor Generator, there is a new direct mounting wet-weather canopy system.
