DeWalt vs Craftsman Tools

Move over, Craftsman – there’s a new sheriff in town, maybe. During the DeWalt/Sears Press Event at this year’s National Hardware Show, we were told that DeWalt Mechanics Tools would find a new home at Sears – right next to the Craftsman brand. Can you say ‘awkward’? I dunno, it just seems a little weird – like cats living with dogs, but we stayed and listened; here’s what we found out (video below).

DeWalt Ratchets, Sockets, and Wrenches

The lineup will include all of the above and be available in sets, as well. The ratchets we were able to see and touch felt heavy-duty, but time will tell if the internal ratcheting mechanisms will hold up, of course. DeWalt claims they’ll offer 3 times the life of standard ratchets.

DeWalt ratchets will be available in 1/4″, 3/8″ and 1/2″ drive and feature a 72-tooth gear system.

DeWalt Socket Rails will run the SAE and Metric size range and have deep laser-etched markings that should last a lifetime of abuse.

The laser-etched markings make the sockets easy to identify.

I was impressed with the anti-slip design of the open-end wrenches. There’s a small indentation on the leading jaw that offers up to 400% more gripping power and helps prevent those nasty slips. In the video, you’ll see this wrench design suspending an engine block, so it’s worth watching.

According to DeWalt, you’ll be able to simply call an 800 number (TBA) if you experience tool failure and they’ll send a replacement out. They also claim there will be no need to send the defective unit back, they just want a description of the fault. We wanted to know why you couldn’t simply return them to Sears and make the exchange, as you can do with Craftsman hand tools. Their reply was murky at best, but I would imagine they’re still formulating the warranty plan and it could be subject to change – stay tuned.

Porter Cable PCE605K Oscillating Tool

The National Hardware Show was a little less crowded this year than in the past. We’re not sure if it’s a sign of the economy or something else. Whatever the case, we got to see some great new tools and accessories from several companies, including Porter Cable. They introduced us to their latest version of the Oscillating Tool and we were impressed with the features.

The Porter Cable PCE605K has some innovative features that could give other tool companies a run for their money.

For starters, the blade change is pretty ingenious – just depress the lever and swap out your accessory. They might be nipping at Bosch’s heels with this one!

Porter Cable’s tool-less blade change looks pretty convenient and smooth.

The roller guide system on the PCE605K has the potential to come in pretty handy on the job.

Their roller guide assembly also makes good sense. By changing its position, you can alter how far you plunge-cut or simply use it as a roller guide to keep it “between the lines”. My first thought was that they had put a lot of stuff on the front end of this tool that could potentially get in the way. It’s all growing on me now, though…I like the features and their benefits, but I’ll reserve judgment until I get to use one for awhile. Stay tuned.

Klein^® Tools Introduces Improved Durability and Quality Test & Measurement Products

Multimeters and receptacle testers made tougher to last longer!

The RT500 and RT600 receptacle testers are designed to detect the most common wiring problems in standard 120V receptacles. Stanley Blower Fan by Lasko Review

This small utility fan is surprisingly powerful, given its rather tiny footprint. It’s made mostly of plastic, including the squirrel cage, which accounts for it light weight. Honestly, I’m surprised at how many ways I’ve already found to put it to good use – it has certainly lived up to the ‘utility’ moniker. The utility fan is manufactured by Lasko, under the Stanley brand name.

Despite its small size and light weight, this fan can move some air!

Great Fan For Jobsites

I’ve already put this fan to work helping dry out both the shop floor and some carpeting in a client’s home, following a hard rain and flood watch here in Nashville. The pivoting head comes in very handy on jobs like this, as you’re able to precisely direct the airflow right where it’s needed.

I actually had to use speed 2, because the fan was actually moving the ponded water; I just wanted air to circulate for evaporative purposes.

The carpet was dried quickly, but due to staining, will likely have to be replaced anyway.

The auxiliary outlets are convenient, as well. I don’t think I’d run a miter saw off them, but they’re great for work lights, a radio, battery chargers, etc. That’s a nice feature to have on a jobsite, obviously.

The outlets are handy and the 4 position speed selector knob moves smoothly.

Blower Fan Testing

I decided to see just how powerful the fan was and tested it by blowing some leaves off the patio. It worked, and while I wouldn’t recommend using the pivot fan as a leaf blower, it’s nice to know it’s available in a pinch.

While not its intended purpose, the Stanley Pivot Utility Fan did an admirable job of clearing dried leaves from a patio.

The carry handle is comfortable with no sharp edges.

More along the lines of its true call to duty, I can see the obvious benefits of using this blower fan to speed up:

• Paint Drying
• Plaster and Drywall Mud Drying
• Circulate air in a stuffy room

I’ve been using it in the shop and on the job just to stay cool and it’s done amazingly well, while be surprisingly quiet. I tend to like white noise, especially at night, so this would be a good bedroom fan, as well if you’re the same. It’ll certainly keep the air circulating.

The fan’s wide stance helps prevent it from blowing itself over. It really is that powerful.

The Stanley Pivoting Fan moves a lot of air through this intake.

Overall, I give this utility fan high marks for its usefulness, power and features. Short of throwing this fan into the back of a truck and tossing a miter saw on top of it, it should give you years of use. I’d recommend blowing off the squirrel cage every few weeks just to keep the dust from building, but other than that, this is a great accessory to have on the job, in the shop, or around the house.

Portable Jobsite Work Table

This is actually the brainchild of Dana Wilkerson, our resident remodeling contractor. Turns out he’s not just another ugly face with a set of tools…he’s actually pretty smart, but don’t tell him or he’ll get a big head.

It’s a simple idea, and relatively inexpensive. Plus, it stores in a much smaller space than horses and plywood.

It Folds; Plywood Doesn’t

Dana carries a plastic folding table like this to every job. It’s the perfect height, so there’s no bending over to pick stuff up off the ground, plus there’s covered storage below. It’s perfect for keeping tool bags and boxes arranged and handy. It can also be used as a miter saw stand in some cases, depending on the quality of the table and the weight of the saw, of course.

I know what you’re thinking – buying a work table is a Contractor Quick Tip? Next, I’ll be recommending that you make sure to wear shoes on the job, right? Not at all. This is just a great option to free up sawhorses and it’s a whole lot easier to carry around than a full or even half sheet of plywood.

They’re available at stores like Costco and Home Depot for anywhere from $40 to over $100, you may even find one at a yard sale. The key feature is folding in half, so that it takes up minimal room.
